The
History of Lithia Springs,
Georgia spans over thousands of years from the Neolithic age to
the present. It is believed that as far back as 4,000
years ago indigenous peoples built from solid granite a stone
temple that paid homage to the eternal healing powers of LITHIA™ Mineral Water. The ruins of this ancient stone temple
can still be seen today, suggesting that the ancient Lithia
Springs was a sacred North American healing center similar to Lourdes,
France.
History tells us
that Lithia Springs was the spiritual, healing, and political center for the
southern Cherokee
for hundreds
of years. When the Cherokee first arrived
in Georgia, during the early 14th century, they believed that Yowa their creator
had guided them to where healing waters flowed from a stone temple built by the
ancients. To use the powers of the stone temples healing water the Cherokee
had to fight
the Creek Indian Tribe over control of the ancient
springs. Instead of warfare the two tribes agreed to play a game of Lacrosse and whoever
won the game also won control of the ancient healing springs. The Cherokee won
the Lacrosse game and with the victory came the right to control the ancient
stone temple and the healing Spring.
Through out many thousands of years Lithia
Springs has been called by many names; Medicine Spring, Sweet Water,
Healing Springs and so many names in so many tongues that have been lost
in time. The Cherokee called the springs "Deer Lick" because the
deer
would come to lick the life giving minerals and drink the healing waters
from the ancient spring. Today, we call this timeless healing place
Lithia Springs and the deer still come to lick the minerals.
For
thousands of years one of the largest earthen pyramid in North America was part of
ancient Lithia
Springs stone temple complex. The size of this ancient pyramid was 10 acres in area
at its base with the height of about 80 feet. It was so large that the first white
settlers in the late 1800's built a stage
coach house on top of it. Tragically, just a few years ago this ancient wonder
was destroyed to build an elevated road with its fill dirt. Behind the
springs was a huge mysterious white quartz crystal eagle that could only be seen
from
the air, this historic treasure was also destroyed for the sake of development.
