Alzheimer's Degenerative Disease

Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by a condition where massive amounts of brain cells are constantly dying. A research team at Wayne State University School of Medicine recently reported that lithium helps keep brain cells alive (neuroprotective), and that it should be investigated as a potential agent in the treatment of Alzheimer's.

Lithium is a naturally occurring micronutrient mineral similar to sodium and potassium. Small amounts are present in most foods, however most of the population is lithium deficient (based on studies that suggest 1mg a day is required).  There exists common misunderstandings about Lithium and its essential dietary needs because it is  popularly known to be used in the treatment for manic depression — also called bipolar disorder. The Wayne State team was studying lithium's effects on manic depression when they discovered that this remarkable mineral can protect brain cells (neuroprotective)from premature death. There has been growing research interest in Lithium and Alzheimer's  disease prevention. The presentation below explains how  Alzheimer's is a degenerative disease. Promising  independent scientific research on Lithium and Alzheimer's prevention can be found in our downloadable brochure.
